I’m excited to see that MajesticSEO just introduce a beta version of their new site explorer (not the most original name. See: opensiteexplorer.org & siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com). I’ve been a big fan of majesticseo.com’s tools for years now. I don’t think anyone would argue that they have the largest database of backlink data available. This makes it a great tool for nearly anyone in the SEO industry. If you’re not using it now, you should be. I want to review the new layout and features available on the Majestic SEO Site Explorer.

In the following screenshots I used example.com: https://www.majesticseo.com/reports/site-explorer/summary/example.com

Improved Backlink Data Layout

MajesticSEO now presents the backlink data in a much simpler and easy to read interface, giving you a quick snapshot of any sites backlink profile. This is great information for an SEO professional but would be information overload for most SEO clients. I would be careful on how you may present this data to a client.

Same Great Backlink History Graphs

For those of you familure with the backlink history graphs this isn’t anything new. For those of you who are not these graphs represent the number of discovered links per month. If you click on these graphs you’ll get additional features like the ability to compare the backlink discovery of multiple domains as well as view it comulatively(my favorite view). It would be nice if they’d allow you to change the defult view on the site explorer page.

Quickly See the 5 Top Backlinks

Again this isn’t a new feature just an improved layout, which the site explorer page does well, giving you a summary of all the data available. In this section you are presented with the top 5 backlinks(Based on MajestiSEOs AC Rank) for the entered domain. This can allow you to also check out some of your(or a client’s) backlinks as well as spy on a competitors top backlinks. This feature can be extremely useful for a link builder.

Referring Domains Visual

This little diagram shows some of the reffering domains that link to the entered site the most. For one reason or another these domains link to the entered site many times. Not the prettiest looking diagram but it does the job.

Most Popular Pages

The final feature you’ll find on MajesticSEO’s site explorer page are the top pages(Based on MajesticSEO’s ACRank). Now you’ll be able to see what your most popular pages are based on their backlinkd ata.

Overall the tool is great! Can’t really complain too much considering all the data that they provide for FREE! If I had any criticisms, is some of the data could be a little nicer looking and a PDF version of this report would be great. Keep up the good work MajesticSEO.

About 3 months ago I decided to do a little SEO experiment. My goal was to find a way I could get a site built, hosted and search engine friendly without spending a dime. The results are in and besides the worth of my time I didn’t spend any money. Using weebly’s website builder I was able to quickly publish a website then I used dot.tk to get the free domain chrishornak.tk. Weebly aloud me to use my freedomain, install google analytics, setup a blog.

I pointed a few links to chrishornak.tk and within 24 hours the site could be found in Google. This was great news but the celebration came to a quick end. By day 3 of the experiment I could no longer find chrishornak.tk in Google’s index. My conclusion is that since dot.tk domains are free most of them are owned by spam websites so Google takes a closer look at any new dot.tk domain. After a few weeks of being in the index and out of the index it finally stayed in the index and the unique keyword phrase page I created “fish taco seo” ranked #1 in Google.

Three months have gone by and the homepage now has a Google PageRank of 2 and a few internal pages including the fish taco page have a PageRank of 1. This is proof that a weebly site and dot.tk domain can be used to create a website on a zero dollar budget.

Lastnight I was reading “Crush it” by Gary Vaynerchuk, who’s known for using social media to grow his brand and wine library tv. While I was reading it I came to a section where he was talking about choosing a blog platform. The two he really focused on was wordpress, which was no surprise, and tubmlr, which was a surprise. He mentioned that with tumblr you could use your own domain and tumblr would host it for free.

I quickly went to my computer and setup a tumblr account. It was easy to use and took very little time to get started. I then asked myself “could I use this to quickly setup a search engine friendly website with no budget.

After a quick search I found that dot.tk allows you to register a free domain with no ads and found that weebly.com allowed you to make a more flexable website. Tumblr is great but it seemed to be aimed at blogging and social media rather than a static website for businesses.

This is what got me to setup what I’m calling the weebly seo experiment. Visit the website for the latest updates.

Subscribe to Major Search Engine Blogs

Part of being an SEO professional is keeping up to date with major search engine updates. To keep things simple I’m just going to talk about tracking Google’s algorithm updates. Of course one of the best places to start is the official Google blog. Subscribe to the feed using an RSS reader like Google Reader. I attempt to read through my RSS feeds everyday, prioritizing each feed into specific categories. The official search engine blog sites are the first ones I read everyday then I work my way down my list; advanced SEO blogs, basic SEO news, social media news, webmaster news, etc. This way I get the most important updates (algorithm changes) first.

Follow Respected SEO Professionals

Now that we’re getting updates from Google themselves, we’ll soon find out we can’t rely on them to tell us every little change. At this point you’ll need to learn to also get RSS updates from respected SEO resources like;

http://mattcuts.com/blog

http://www.seomoz.org/blog

http://www.wolf-howl.com

These and other blogs do your homework for you and provide case studies of their results. Reading these blogs will be the third best way to track Google changes using RSS feeds. You’re probably now asking yourself “what was the second best way?” The second best way is to do your own experiments, track your own results and analyze your own experience.

Bookmark The Important Updates

The final step of the process is having a place you can go to to review the most recent Google Updates or even look to the past to reference an older update. This process is something new that I just started doing this month but has already become very valuable to me when working with clients and explaining changes that may effect them. I have been using my favorite bookmarking delicious.com to bookmark the updates that are important. Please feel free to subscribe to this feed for yourself.

Use Collaboration to Make a Larger List

One other suggestion is to work with others to have a shared list of updates. This way you have a greater chance of catching all major algorithm updates. Maybe put one person in charge of tracking Google, another person tracking Bing and a third tracking Yahoo (even though they’ll become Bing soon) and Ask.

Good luck!
