I got into work today, read through my emails and rss subscriptions. I found an article I wanted to share on twitter only to find out that twitter is down. It’s been an hour and a half and it’s still down. I thought of the next closest thing to a live search and did a google blog search for twitter down. Twitter has become a great way to get the word out about something going on in the world but what happens when that something is twitter? Let’s hope it’s not because of a hack.

*Twitter Back up: Updated 1:00pm eastern*

Looks like twitter is back up and according to a news article on the front page of Google news it was due to a DOS attack.

In a blog post, presumably hosted on an unaffected server, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone acknowledged the attack. “Attacks such as this are malicious efforts orchestrated to disrupt and make unavailable services such as online banks, credit card payment gateways, and in this case, Twitter for intended customers or users,” he said. “We are defending against this attack now and will continue to update our status blog as we continue to defend and later investigate.”

Twitter is going to need to step-up their security if they want to keep on prospering.

There’s also more information about this on Mashable.
