No Budget SEO Experiment

Lastnight I was reading “Crush it” by Gary Vaynerchuk, who’s known for using social media to grow his brand and wine library tv. While I was reading it I came to a section where he was talking about choosing a blog platform. The two he really focused on was wordpress, which was no surprise, and tubmlr, which was a surprise. He mentioned that with tumblr you could use your own domain and tumblr would host it for free.

I quickly went to my computer and setup a tumblr account. It was easy to use and took very little time to get started. I then asked myself “could I use this to quickly setup a search engine friendly website with no budget.

After a quick search I found that dot.tk allows you to register a free domain with no ads and found that weebly.com allowed you to make a more flexable website. Tumblr is great but it seemed to be aimed at blogging and social media rather than a static website for businesses.

This is what got me to setup what I’m calling the weebly seo experiment. Visit the website for the latest updates.

Tracking Google Algorithm Updates

Subscribe to Major Search Engine Blogs

Part of being an SEO professional is keeping up to date with major search engine updates. To keep things simple I’m just going to talk about tracking Google’s algorithm updates. Of course one of the best places to start is the official Google blog. Subscribe to the feed using an RSS reader like Google Reader. I attempt to read through my RSS feeds everyday, prioritizing each feed into specific categories. The official search engine blog sites are the first ones I read everyday then I work my way down my list; advanced SEO blogs, basic SEO news, social media news, webmaster news, etc. This way I get the most important updates (algorithm changes) first. Analyzing the Ability to Pass PageRank or Link Juice

I was recently putting together a manual link building guide.  The guide was developed to go through the process of how to find potential links using a number of different tools and strategies.  Once I got the reader to understand each way to find the links I needed to also provide a way for them to analyze the page to ensure by getting a link there it would provide some sort of benefit to the rank of the website within search engines.

8 Advanced Search Engine Research Papers

Recently I’ve been collecting online resources that look deeper into the science behind search engines.  Here are some of the papers I’ve read that I felt like really provided me with a much deeper insight into SEO.  When you start out learning about search engine’s optimization you get caught up in many of the tips and tricks that are found all over the internet but after a while you start to learn which resources to trust and then you start reading between the lines.  The next logical step is to start researching the history of search engines and the science behind their inner workings. 8 Advanced Search Engine Research Papers continued »

Guide to On-Page Optimization

Monday Rand Fishkin make a great post on the SEOmoz blog titled Perfecting Keyword Targeting & On-Page Optimization.  I usually pass over these on-page checklists as it seems they are a dime a dozen and usually there’s a lot of opinion that over shadows the core principles.  This article really stuck out Guide to On-Page Optimization continued »

Twitter is Down… what are we to do?

I got into work today, read through my emails and rss subscriptions. I found an article I wanted to share on twitter only to find out that twitter is down.  It’s been an hour and a half and it’s still down. I thought of the next closest thing to a live search and did a google blog search for twitter down. Twitter has become a great way to get the word out about something going on in the world but what happens when that something is twitter? Let’s hope it’s not because of a hack.
